I have always wanted to visit this place having heard some good reviews about their delicious food and baked goods. As I was planning to catch up with Ms. GO, we finally decided to visit this cute vintage cafe and tried their lunch menu (it's served from midday).
Located on a quiet corner across the road from Petersham Park, the couple behind this white vintage cafe, Iain and Katherine Smart, baked all the cakes, cookies and tarts daily in-house while their coffee is by The Little Marionette.
Upon entering, I went straight to their display cabinet filled with all the sweet treats and it was so difficult to choose from the huge meringues, tarts, chewy chocolate chip cookies with a little sprinkling of salt to the several unique donut flavours! We chose to have their delicate Lavender Donut with tangy Lemon curd filling, Cookies and Cream Donut and the Chocolate Chip Cookies.
I knew precisely what I wanted to have as soon as I looked at the menu, YES! Their Crispy Duck Sweet Corn Pancake for sure! The tender succulent shredded duck with its crispy skin was wrapped together with fresh cucumber and coriander in a thin pancake skin (it was more like a French Crepe in my opinion rather than a pancake). The combination of sweet, savoury and tangy flavour from hoisin sauce and creme fraiche blended so well and added extra richness to this dish in overall.
Ms. Go ordered their Smoked Fish Cakes and it was coated with crispy panko crumb and moist on the inside. The addition of fennel brought extra crunch and sweet flavour to balance the strong fishy taste and the sauce vierge gave a wonderful and fresh tasting that went along with the juicy grilled prawns.
